The Power of Data Visualisation

The Power of Data Visualisation

If you've ever pondered the value of good graphic design or the need for effective data visualisation, this diagram of two airline boarding cards presents an excellent case.

Data visualisation, when done well, transforms complex numbers and information into clear, intuitive visuals that make patterns and insights instantly understandable to any audience.

Here's five reasons why we think boarding pass #2 is a great example of effective data visualisation:

  1. Clarity over clutter: boarding pass #2 gets rid of airline industry codes and jargon, to just show what the passenger needs. Good visualisation removes clutter so the message shines through.
  2. Icons beat text: a seat map, gate symbol and plane icon removes any language barriers to communicate the message in an instant. Visuals are processed far faster than written information.
  3. Hierarchy guides the eye: the second boarding pass organises information by priority (who, where, when), so you can find the most important info without hunting for it. Good design tells you where to look first.
  4. Reduced workload: boarding pass #1 forces you to decode abbreviations such as 'MPLS-ST PAUL'. The second version uses plain labels. Less mental effort means fewer mistakes.
  5. Trust through simplicity: a clean, intuitive design feels more reliable and professional. When data is easy to understand, users trust both the information and the organisation behind it.
